Book Recommendations

I read a lot. I always have and probably always will. Books are my favorite way to get out of my head and into the endless worlds created by the words of others.

When my husband died, I couldn’t focus long enough to remember what I needed at the grocery store, let alone read a book. After about a year and a half, the fog began to dissipate enough for me to get through one memoir. I was so thrilled about this accomplishment that I read another. And another. And another. Sometimes, I read two books in a single weekend. I became obsessed. By the end of that year, I’d finished 38 books.

I was so enchanted by the bravery of people who wrote about their worst moments in life. Memoirs about loss, grief, and trauma of all kinds gave me peace. This gave way to books on humor and travel. I don’t have an exact total, and I haven’t finished each book I’ve started. But I’ve finished reading somewhere in the realm of 175 books since that first memoir. Books got me through the shitstorm when nothing and nobody else could.

I love books. Maybe you do, too. Or maybe you’re just looking for one to help you make sense of your grief and trauma. Perhaps you just need a good laugh. If you’re looking for something to read, please check out my Book Shop and buy something for yourself.

*I promote the buying of books on bookshop.org because they connect readers with and financially support independent booksellers.
